Chelsea Joy Handler is a New Jersey native born in Livingston on February 25, 1975. The family was comprised of six people including Chelsea Joy Handler as the youngest. Handler was raised in a household with six kids. Her mother worked at home while her father was a dealer of used vehicles. Her mother emigrated from Germany into Germany to the United States as a young woman in 1958. After ten long years of fighting breast cancer, Handler died in 1989. Her father was Jewish as was her mother, and she raised within Reform Judaism. Handler had a happy and healthy childhood living in a posh community. Handler was 19 when she decided to move into Los Angeles and pursue acting. In order to support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. However, when she was 21 years old, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy full time, because she realized her story telling abilities. Handler's stand-up career began when she was part of an all-female Oxygen TV cast in the hidden camera/practical humor reality show Girls Behaving Unsteadily. The show was broadcast from 2002 until 2005. The handler began to appear on other TV shows, such as Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler appeared on The Tonight Show for a time as a reporter. Handler got her most famous break in 2006 when she was named host on E! The Chelsea Handler Program. It lasted two seasons. The following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend & HBO have broadcast Handler's standup shows. In 2010, she was confirmed for the role of host at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. With this, she became only the second female to host the VMA's, following Roseanne Barr.
